Promotion Interviews Of 36,053 To Start On Dec 4
The Teachers Service Commission is set to carry out promotional interviews to fill the 36,053 vacancies that were announced in August this year. This process will occur in three phases, commencing on December 4, 2023, following the completion of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
In preparation for these interviews, invitation letters were dispatched to all shortlisted teachers on October 30, 2023. Candidates are required to provide valid Chapter 6 documents before their appointments can be finalized. The vacancies were initially advertised shortly after the promotion of 14,000 teachers, and teachers had until August 28, 2023, to submit their applications online.
Phase I
The first phase of promotional interviews will be held at the sub-county level and will target teachers seeking promotions from Grades C1 to C5 in primary schools. This phase will take place from December 4 to December 15, 2023. Positions to be filled include Headteacher positions in regular primary schools and Special Needs Primary Schools at T-Scale 10, with 1,049 and 30 positions, respectively. Additionally, 1,930 positions will be filled for Deputy Headteacher II in regular primary schools at T-Scale 9. For Senior Teacher I in regular primary schools and SNE primary schools at T-Scale 8, the Commission aims to fill 3,040 and 346 positions, respectively. Senior Teacher II positions in both regular and SNE primary schools at T-Scale 7 will see 10,819 and 700 positions filled, respectively.

Phase II
The second phase of interviews is designed for post-primary teachers seeking promotions in grades C3 to D1. This phase will occur at the county level from January 4 to January 16, 2024. Positions include promotions to Deputy Principal III in regular secondary schools at T-Scale 11 with 1,014 positions and Senior Master III in regular secondary schools with 1,137 vacant positions. The Commission has also advertised 216 positions for Senior Lecturer IV in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) at T-Scale 9, and a substantial 12,576 positions for Senior Master IV in regular secondary schools at T-Scale 9. Secondary Teacher I in regular secondary schools at T-Scale 8 will have only 1,918 positions available.
Phase III
The third and final phase of promotional interviews will involve post-primary administrators seeking promotions in grades D2 to D5. These interviews will be conducted at regional levels from February 4 to February 16, 2024. Positions to be filled include 34 Chief Principal positions in regular secondary schools at T-Scale 15, 103 Senior Principal positions at T-Scale 14, 541 Principal positions at T-Scale 13, 528 vacancies for Deputy Principal II at T-Scale 12, and 72 vacancies for Senior Lecturer I at T-Scale 12.
TSC had previously announced a budget of Ksh2.2 billion to facilitate the promotion of teachers by the end of this year. Teachers’ unions have welcomed this move, emphasizing the importance of fairness in conducting the promotion interviews. The Commission’s consideration of teachers in job groups C3, C4, and C5 has been particularly praised.
