Primary Headteachers Start To Admit Posted JSS Interns
“In recent days, intern teachers assigned to junior secondary schools (JSS) and primary schools have begun reporting to their respective institutions following the issuance of their posting letters.
Today, a significant number of these interns were received by primary school headteachers, who are also acting as junior secondary school principals. Those who have reported have completed and submitted their online records to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ensure that their salaries are processed promptly.
TSC has faced scrutiny due to delays in paying the salaries of intern teachers who were posted in January. Many teachers endured months without receiving their stipends, leading to rumors of financial constraints within the government. However, the situation has since stabilized, and TSC is expected to pay the newly posted intern teachers on time.
In July, the commission invited applications from qualified candidates to fill 20,000 teacher internship positions. Out of these, 18,000 intern teachers will be assigned to junior secondary schools, while the remaining 2,000 will work in primary schools to support the implementation of the new curricula. The online application window remained open for two weeks until it closed on July 18th.

Junior secondary school intern teachers will be responsible for teaching various subjects within the curriculum and will receive a monthly stipend of Sh20,000. Those teaching in primary schools will earn Sh15,000. However, these teachers will also experience deductions, including a Sh360 NSSF deduction, a 1.5% house levy, and NHIF contributions.
The teachers will serve under a one-year contract period, which can be renewed for an additional year before they are considered for permanent and pensionable terms. Dr. Nancy Macharia, the CEO of TSC, stated that the commission aims to employ a minimum of 25,000 teachers each year for the next five years, subject to the availability of funds.
The fate of the current intern teachers who were posted in January remains uncertain, as TSC was not allocated funds in the July budget to confirm their status beyond January 2024.”
