Post-Primary School Teachers to Be Excluded From KCSE Invigilation

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has raised concerns with the Kenya National Examination Council regarding the employment of secondary school teachers as invigilators for the KCSE exams.

Mr. Stephen Yogo, Executive Secretary of the Homa Bay branch, has expressed apprehension that having secondary school teachers as invigilators may lead to increased exam cheating, as they might possess the same course content knowledge as the students they are supervising.

He specifically pointed out that English teachers, for instance, may feel inclined to correct students’ mistakes in subjects like prepositions during the exam. To mitigate this risk of cheating, the union secretary recommended that the examination body consider hiring primary and junior secondary school teachers as invigilators.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has vetted 223,223 teachers to serve as supervisors and invigilators for the national examinations, with 37,731 educators set to administer the exams. The Kenya National Examination Council will conduct sub-county briefing meetings nationwide, which none of the 71,760 center administrators will delegate.

In the first week of October 2023, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will hold sub-county briefing meetings, with the center managers’ active participation.

This marks the final administration of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) under the 8-4-4 system due to the revised curriculum, with only five classes remaining to undertake the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.
