Mason Mount is leaving Chelsea for Manchester United in a deal worth up to £60 million, against the wishes of manager Mauricio Pochettino.
United agreed on Thursday to pay Chelsea £55 million, plus an additional £5 million in add-ons, following protracted negotiations that were at risk of failing. Mount, who previously earned £80,000 per week at Chelsea, will now earn £250,000 per week at his new club.
Mount is anticipated to undertake his medical early the following week, after which he will join the growing exodus from Chelsea, with Kai Havertz, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic already gone and Hakim Ziyech and Ruben Loftus-Cheek on the verge of joining them.
Due to the excessive spending of the previous transfer windows, Chelsea required a squad overhaul this summer. But while Pochettino supported the aforementioned departures, he was less enthusiastic about Mount’s departure.
Pochettino is known to prefer working with small, close-knit squads in order to cultivate team spirit and ensure his demands are met. Mount struggled with injuries last season and contributed just three goals and two assists in 24 Premier League appearances, but he has the potential to thrive under Pochettino’s management at his best.
As reported by Mirror Football in May, prior to Pochettino’s official appointment, Pochettino viewed Mount as an integral part of his Chelsea endeavor. Mount’s playmaking ability, work ethic, and devotion to his former team made him an ideal candidate for the prospective manager.
The 24-year-old could have flourished alongside Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Benoit Badiashile, and Levi Colwill in a new-look side, per the manager’s plan. Mount, for his part, desired to remain with Chelsea for the majority of the previous season, but felt undervalued because his weekly salary of £80,000 did not even place him among the club’s top 20 earnings.
Next season, Mason Mount will not be employed by Mauricio Pochettino.
In November, he rejected an offer of approximately £200,000 per week, and Chelsea never offered him more. Mount was adamant about moving to Old Trafford once interest from Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United became apparent.
Mount will depart Chelsea with a sorrowful heart, having graduated from the club’s academy as one of its most successful players. He made 195 appearances for the first team, scoring 33 goals and providing 37 assists, and was twice named the club’s player of the season.
The Blues are in the midst of a complete reconstruction, so Pochettino will have a monumental preseason assignment. More departures are anticipated, while Christopher Nkunku’s £52 million transfer from RB Leipzig was the only verified arrival as of July 1.
Chelsea is reportedly interested in signing Moises Caicedo, who has already agreed to personal terms with Brighton. The 21-year-old Ecuadorian international came close to joining Arsenal in January, but the Gunners’ pursuit of Declan Rice provides Chelsea with a clear opportunity to complete a deal.
