Pep Guardiola has indicated what the most severe consequence could be for Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola has previously intimated that the greatest ‘punishment’ for Manchester City may be Liverpool’s rivals. The Premier League has penalized Manchester City with more than 100 potential violations of financial laws.

If Jurgen Klopp believes that the past few days have been difficult for him at Liverpool, he may choose to contact Pep Guardiola.

The Reds’ season may have sunk further into the hole with their latest dismal performance, this time against Wolves on Saturday afternoon, but Manchester City have begun the week as the most beleaguered of the Premier League heavyweights.

Failure to close the gap on an Arsenal side that was beaten at Everton on Saturday lunchtime was a regrettable aspect of City’s weekend as they fell to Tottenham 1-0 in north London, but it was the Premier League’s bombshell statement on Monday morning that will have truly shaken Pep Guardiola and everyone else connected to the Etihad.

What’ Trending

The shocking announcement that City has been charged with over one hundred suspected violations of financial standards was the result of a four-year inquiry. The Premier League said on its website that City’s alleged misbehavior dates back to 2009 and spans nine seasons.

The probe, which began in December 2018 when German publication Der Spiegel released papers initially hacked by Portuguese computer hacker Rui Pinto, will now be referred to a commission created by the Premier League’s independent Chair of the Judicial Panel.

It is alleged that City misrepresented sponsorship, privately boosted the salaries of important personnel, and violated rules about how young players may be approached. A few weeks ago, the news that City, a club with a much smaller global fanbase than many of their on-field rivals in domestic and European football, had topped the 2022 Deloitte Money League with £619m, ahead of Real Madrid, Manchester United, and yes, Liverpool, raised eyebrows within football circles.

Man City generates more commercial money than Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, and Liverpool. “This can’t be true,” Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher tweeted in response to the Premier League’s announcement of the data on Monday.

Manchester City is astonished by the issuing of these purported Premier League rule violations, especially given the significant engagement and large number of comprehensive materials that have been provided to the EPL.”

“The club welcomes a review of this matter by an independent commission to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.”

The subsequent events will be intriguing. City has strenuously denied any violations of financial regulations, but the sheer number of complaints is shocking. City was banned from the Champions League and fined £25 million in February 2020 after it was determined that the club had misled UEFA and violated financial fair play regulations. The court of arbitration for sport subsequently reduced the club’s sentence to £9 million.

The CAS declared at the time that “the majority of the claimed violations were either unproven or time-barred.” In this scenario, there are no time limits on the Premier League’s charges, which might be crucial to any future fines. A financial fine on a club with City’s enormous fortune would be pointless.
