Preparations for this the Kenya Primary Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) are hanging in the balance as the government is yet to release capitation balances.
There could be an early closure of schools, this week as stated by the school heads due to lack of funds as national examinations draw close.
The acquisition of examination material was faced with hurdles as the government was yet to issue the expected 15 million shillings education funds according to headteachers.
All schools are supposed to close by Friday, March 19th to pave way for candidates to sit the national examinations. Headteachers have warned that the schools might close before then as they lack funds to keep learners in schools.
Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESHA) chairman Mr. Kahi Indimuli said that they have not received the money and according to principals who spoke to him, schools will begin closing as early as today if the funds are not sent to their accounts.
The government promised to release funds by the end of February and they are still waiting. Education CS Magoha had promised that the money would be released to all schools/accounts by the end of last week.
“We shall release the money next week to schools and therefore no one should try to cause panic or anxiety,” assured Magoha on Thursday, March 11th.
KCPE examinations are set to start on March 22nd and end on 24th with 1,066,986 candidates expected to sit the examinations. KCSE candidates are set to begin their exams on March 25th.
