As the nation’s annual examinations are underway, a series of concerning incidents have disrupted the process. These incidents encompass cheating scandals, candidates experiencing labor during exams, and even tragic events resulting in fatalities. The most recent and distressing occurrence unfolded just hours ago when suspected bandits opened fire on students taking the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Primary School Leaving Examination (KPSEA) at Ng’aratuko Primary School in Baringo North.

Reports from reliable sources reveal that Ng’aratuko Primary School had a total of 51 candidates, consisting of 32 KCPE candidates and 19 students sitting for the sixth-grade KPSEA.

The Police Commander of Baringo County, Julius Kiragu, confirmed this distressing event and indicated that the attack was carried out by armed criminals who were targeting herders while they were tending to their livestock in a grazing field. Tragically, a 29-year-old herder named Silas Chelimo suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was immediately rushed to Marigat Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical care. The impact on the students, in terms of their safety and well-being, is yet to be fully assessed.

The police commander acknowledged that the exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear. According to an initial school report, examination materials had not been secured at the time of the attack. These unsettling incidents have cast a shadow over the already challenging period of national examinations, raising significant concerns about the safety and security of students participating in these crucial assessments.
