Opinion Piece: Healthy Lifestyle for a Longer Life

Maintaining good health is a top priority for almost everyone, and our daily choices have a significant impact on our overall well-being. Although some factors affecting our health may be beyond our control, the habits and approaches we adopt towards our health can make a considerable difference between a healthy or unhealthy life.

Two areas where we have the most control over are our diet and exercise, both of which can have a tremendous effect on our overall health, preventing diseases and other complications later in life.

In many countries, regular cycling or walking to work can help keep fitness levels up. Taking part in physical activity, whether it is walking, running, team sports or yoga, is an excellent way to keep the mind and body healthy.

A healthy lifestyle involves being physically active, improving brain health, managing weight, reducing the risk of diseases, strengthening bones and muscles, and improving your ability to do everyday activities. People who sit less and do any amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity gain some health benefits.

A healthy and balanced diet complemented by regular exercise is essential in maintaining physical and mental health and well-being. Eating the right foods, coupled with appropriate exercise, can boost your body’s ability to fight diseases.

A balanced diet that meets all the essential nutrients required by the body can help maintain an ideal body weight and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Similarly, exercise helps prevent excess weight gain or maintain weight loss, keeps your blood flowing smoothly, decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases and improves brain-related function and outcomes.

Positive thinking and reduced stress levels are also vital in achieving a happy and healthy life. Healthy lifestyles are associated with improved sleep and mood.

A nutritious diet is especially crucial for children as it helps in growth and developmental problems. Studies show that maintaining a healthy diet and exercising often can help control or delay health issues associated with aging, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Despite the importance of a healthy lifestyle, our environment does not sufficiently enable the public to make healthier choices easily. Unhealthy diets and physical inactivity remain among the leading causes of the major NCD’s and contribute substantially to the global burden of disease.

However, healthy habits, such as drinking coffee or tea, eating healthy foods, following a low-sugar diet, exercising, and getting enough sleep, can boost health and put people on the path to a stronger and happier life.

In summary, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical in ensuring a long and healthy life. Engaging in regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and reducing stress levels are key elements in achieving a healthy and successful life.

While some aspects of health may be beyond our control, the habits and approaches we take towards our health can significantly impact our overall well-being.
