Open University of Kenya announces application dates

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has recently opened applications for admission to the Open University of Kenya (OUK), with the enrollment period commencing on August 28.

Mercy Wahome, the Chief Executive of Kuccps, has announced the availability of the application portal for those interested in joining OUK. The university was granted a charter on August 3, 2023.

According to Kuccps, the cost of pursuing an undergraduate degree at OUK will be Ksh105,000, except for the Bachelor of Technology Education program, which will have a fee of Ksh115,000 per year for full-time study.

For those interested in a postgraduate diploma program, the tuition fee will be Ksh110,000 for a single academic year.

Wahome clarified that the annual fees for degree programs have taken into account a 15% government-negotiated discount under the new higher education funding model.

Kuccps has introduced the option for learners at OUK to individually pay and pursue specific course units. This option is available for both bachelor’s degree and postgraduate diploma programs, with a cost of Ksh10,000 per unit. It’s important to note that international students and those outside East Africa will incur an additional 10% charge for all programs and course units.

The minimum entry requirements for the bachelor’s degree programs include a mean grade of C+ and above in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent. Diplomas or professional qualifications from recognized institutions, as well as KCSE certificates or equivalents, are also accepted.

Wahome highlighted that applications through the KUCCPS portal will be free of charge and without any specified deadline. She explained that this approach aligns with the unique learning mode and flexible modular program design of the Open University.

Bachelor’s degree applicants are eligible for government scholarships and loans under the new funding model criteria.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Elijah Omwenga, has recommended that the placement body list five-degree programs and two postgraduate diploma courses on the student placement application portal.

The undergraduate offerings include Bachelor of Data Science, Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, Bachelor of Technology Education, Bachelor of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Bachelor of Economics and Statistics.

The postgraduate diploma programs comprise the flagship Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Accountability, as well as the Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Design and Technology.

Both the degree and postgraduate diploma programs consist of 12 to 14 course units per academic year. Postgraduate programs are designed to be completed in one year, while bachelor’s degree programs typically span four years.

However, students have the flexibility to pursue open and self-paced learning, completing course units at their preferred pace and planning their study periods accordingly.
