Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the Principal Secretary in charge of Higher Learning and Research, has refuted claims that universities are turning away government-sponsored students due to tuition fees. She clarified that no higher learning institution has requested fees from students.

During the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s annual innovation open day, Dr. Inyangala stated that the Ministry of Education is still in the process of categorizing students admitted to universities, including those who will receive full government sponsorship, those who are vulnerable, and those with varying financial needs.

She assured that no university has expelled students over tuition fees, and the admission process is ongoing to accommodate all students.

Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, the Vice Chancellor of JKUAT, also affirmed that no students are being asked to pay fees currently. Out of the 6,000 students received, none have been turned away; they are undergoing orientation before starting their studies.

Dr. Inyangala encouraged universities to focus on research and innovation to address societal challenges, commending JKUAT for leading in this aspect and emphasizing that innovation is essential for creating new opportunities.

The PS noted that universities should step out of the “ivory tower” to tackle real-world problems and showcased several innovative solutions presented at the event, including a cough syrup derived from snail slime for treating children’s dry coughs.

This research project at JKUAT also aims to produce snail meat, skincare products, organic fertilizers, and animal feeds, all derived from snail-related resources. These innovations align with Kenya’s Vision 2030, emphasizing science, technology, innovation, and education development to address various challenges, particularly in agriculture and climate adaptation.
