New KNUT Leadership Promises To change its engagements with TSC and the government at large
Following Wilson Sossion’s resignation as the Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Collins Oyuu became the new and the 7TH SG unopposed. He will be deputised by Hesbon Otieno who was also elected unopposed.
“This is a day teachers have really looked out for, to have a total change in the leadership of this great union, especially at the top and I want to say specifically in the position of secretary-general,” Oyoo stated.
Also elected unopposed were; Patrick Kariga who retained his position as the national chairman, James Ndiku who replaced John Matiang’i who opted out of the race to become the national treasurer, and Hussein Ali Abdi (deputy national treasurer).
Stanley Mutai beat Dan Aloo as the first vice-chairman. The second elected vice-chairperson will be John Lutta Wesonga. A total of 1,878 delegates from eight regions across the Country voted in person.
Kennedy Nyamwanda is the new Assistant National Treasurer while the two national women representatives are Mercy Kiambati and Mery Ndungu.
Edward Olando was elected to represent people living with disabilities while Boniface Tenai, Albert Njeru Mutani and Fredrick Nguma were elected as the first, second and third national trustees respectively.
Oyuu disclosed that the union was crippled financially, adding that some branch offices had been closed. “Branch secretaries across the 110 offices have not been earning salaries for close to two years,” he stated.
KNUT’s new leadership announced it will change its engagements with both the TSC and the government at large. The newly elected Secretary-General, Collins Oyuu, promised great reforms to improve the union’s status.
He first joined the union leadership in 1996 when he became a branch executive committee member in Siaya county before being elected the chair of the Bondo branch in 2002.
In 2008, he was elected as the secretary of the Rarieda branch and in 2013, he joined the National Steering committee.
As he exited the union, Sossion affirmed that he would be loyal to KNUT and would forever be available to advise and support the leadership of the union.
“In the interest of KNUT continuity and its membership, I hereby on June 25, 2021 bow out of KNUT leadership honorably. I shall remain loyal to KNUT and will always be available to advice and support the leadership of the union,” said Sossion
“As I exit, I hope the government will support teachers. I am making this appeal. I trust that the government will find it necessary to allow the union money to flow to the teachers,” he added.
