New 2024 Fee Increment proposals As Parents Set To pay up To 20,000 More In Extra County Schools
Many are now questioning the future of free secondary school education, given the recent proposals for new fees in the coming year. The government’s shift in funding for universities this year has posed challenges for students, particularly in public universities, where high fees are a barrier. The previous uniform funding model has been replaced, and now, only students who can demonstrate financial need receive government support. This shift may extend to secondary schools, as indicated by the proposed fee structure:
1. National schools, which currently charge up to 55,554 shillings per year, are set to increase their fees to 73,182 shillings, an addition of up to 19,628 shillings. Government funding will remain at 22,244 shillings. Extra county schools will face significant fee increases, requiring an additional 25,488 shillings from the current 40,000 shillings, resulting in a new fee structure of 66,023 shillings.
Day schools, which previously had minimal fees or none at all, except for meal expenses in some cases, will now charge 5,372 shillings as fees, while government funding remains at 22,244 shillings.
Considering the already high cost of living, these fee increases may render education unaffordable for many students, similar to the challenges faced in universities, where some students are unable to enroll due to outstanding balances.
