National Exams to Be Delivered Using Helicopter
The government has unveiled comprehensive plans to deploy air assistance to regions that may be affected by the upcoming El Niño rains during the national exams in November.
This year, approximately 3.5 million students will take national examinations, including 1.4 million for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), 1.2 million for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), and 900,000 for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (KCSE).
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) notes that El Niño often brings heavy rainfall and flooding to East Africa in October, November, and December (OND).
Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Basic Education, made this announcement during a meeting with education officials from the coastal region at Shimo la Tewa High School in Mombasa. He stated that they were actively identifying areas prone to rain-related disruptions and working collaboratively with various stakeholders in education and security to ensure thorough preparedness.
Dr. Kipsang emphasized that they were getting ready for the exams in anticipation of El Niño rains, with a focus on identifying potential flood zones and ensuring timely delivery of exams and invigilators to the exam centers. Government helicopters from various agencies, including the police, military, forestry service, and KWS, would be mobilized to assist during the exams.

Regional Commissioners, along with County Commissioners and their Deputies, will oversee the mapping efforts as part of the national government’s administrative structure.
Dr. Kipsang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to conducting the examinations and assured candidates that precautions had been taken to mitigate the impact of the expected rains, which were predicted with over 90 percent certainty. He stressed the importance of heeding these predictions and not ignoring the impending weather event.
Additionally, in areas prone to security issues like Lamu County, the government has implemented security measures throughout the entire exam period to ensure student safety, as confirmed by Dr. Kipsang.
