Scott McTominay is desired by Roma, with his former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, with whom he shares a close relationship, generating interest in the midfielder.

Jose Mourinho wants Roma to acquire Scott McTominay this summer, claiming the midfielder is Manchester United’s “best player”

McTominay, 26 years old, made his senior debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and has since become a mainstay under several of the Portuguese’s successors at Old Trafford. He has made 209 appearances for the club’s first team, netting 19 goals.

The Scotland international has been linked to a summer exit from United as the club looks to bolster its midfield options. Mason Mount has already been acquired from Chelsea, with Moises Caicedo and Sofyan Amrabat also being associated to the club.

McTominay would not be the only United midfielder to depart this summer, as Zidane Iqbal and Fred may also join Fulham. The Brazilian’s contract is entering its final year, and all indications point to Erik ten Hag allowing him to depart for the right price.

According to Corriere della Sera, cited by Sport Witness, Mourinho is the motivating force behind Roma’s interest in McTominay. This transfer would reunite the player with Nemanja Matic, with whom he played at Old Trafford for multiple seasons.

United would demand a transfer fee in the vicinity of £25 million for their former youth-team player, whom Mourinho highly values. The Portuguese manager even created his own ‘Manager’s Player of the Year’ award, which he presented to the midfielder at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season.

McTominay was one of Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenants at Man United.

Since then, Mourinho has been effusive in his praise for McTominay. When he was manager of Tottenham in 2019, Mourinho stated, “Yes, it’s very important to give academy players first-team experience; Scott McTominay is Manchester United’s best player.”

McTominay, for his part, has also praised Mourinho, with whom he has maintained contact. Late in 2019, he explained, “I obviously don’t want to speak too much about previous managers, but Jose is very special to me.”

“He still keeps in contact with me now and keeps in touch with me after some games. He’ll always have a special place in mine and my family’s heart because he was the one who brought you in, he was the one who trusted you, he’s the one who had belief in you.

“I owe a tremendous amount of credit to him because if it wasn’t for him I might not be here.”
