More Than 1,500 Primary Teachers fail Exams
During the announcement of these results at State House in Nakasero on a Friday, Professor Elly Katunguka, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, observed a decrease in the overall student performance in the 2021 Grade III exams when compared to the previous year.
However, he did mention that all subjects in the 2021 exams received high scores, achieving an overall pass rate of 97 percent.
Significantly, there was notable improvement in the performance of students in English Language Education, with a pass rate of 99.80 percent in 2021, compared to 94.7 percent in the 2020 Grade III Exams. Conversely, there was a decline in performance in Mathematics education, with a pass rate of 75.24 percent in 2021, down from 96.0 percent in the 2020 Grade III Exams.
Regarding distinctions, there were fewer attained in 2021, with only 130 distinctions, constituting 2.3 percent of the results, as opposed to the 411 obtained in the 2020 Grade III exams, which accounted for 4.63 percent. The percentage of credit passes also decreased in 2021, with only 64.8 percent (3,616 candidates) passing, compared to 79.19 percent (7,024 candidates) in the 2020 Grade III exams.
Furthermore, the number of candidates who just passed decreased from 63 (0.71 percent) in 2020 to 40 (0.7 percent) in 2021.
In 2021, the majority of candidates encountered difficulties, with a total of 1,586 (28.4 percent) failing, in contrast to 922 (10.39 percent) who failed in 2020.
Additionally, 204 candidates (3.7 percent) in 2021 received ungraded results, while 450 candidates (5.07 percent) received ungraded results in 2020.
The top-performing candidate in the 2021 Grade III Teachers’ Certificate in Primary Teacher Education Examinations was Mugisa Tumwine from St. Augustine Butiiti PTC in Kyenjojo District. Tumwine achieved an aggregate score of 13 out of a possible 9 in nine subjects and received an ‘A’ in school practice.
The highest-ranking female candidate overall was Zainabu Owokunda from Bikungu PTC in Bushenyi District. Owokunda secured an aggregate score of 14 out of a possible 9 in nine subjects and received an ‘A’ in school practice, earning her an overall distinction.
