The government has initiated significant changes to the mandatory coursework and admission criteria for universities. In the context of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, the Kenya Ministry of Education has introduced a new grading system.

This announcement was made by Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education (CS), during the commencement of the 2023 national examination period.

Under the updated grading system, students are now required to study only two compulsory subjects to determine their average score, namely Mathematics and a language (such as English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language). Additionally, students have the flexibility to select five additional subjects in which they excel.

These reforms are expected to lead to an increase in the number of eligible candidates gaining admission to universities, degree programs, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs at certification and craft levels.

The Ministry of Education is also reviewing the minimum admission standards for teacher training programs, particularly the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE). Admission to these programs will now be based on the new prerequisites and test results for subject groups.

These changes align with the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on Education Reform, which aims to enhance IT infrastructure for school programs and elevate digital literacy among educators, parents, and other stakeholders to integrate technology into education.

Furthermore, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is promoting digital literacy by administering e-assessments to prospective teachers, equipping them with digital skills that can benefit students.

Lastly, the government is taking measures to ensure the safe and timely distribution of examination materials to various locations and to secure the safety of financial assets. These actions are part of the government’s commitment to monitoring weather forecasts and evaluating test results for the year 2023.
