MoE Introduce Adult Education To be Spearheaded by Chiefs
Isaiah Nyamweno, the Director of Adult Education for Kakamega County, has spearheaded an initiative to encourage adults to enroll in specialized continuous education centers.
The primary goal is to raise the country’s literacy rate. Nyamweno believes that this initiative will not only boost socioeconomic growth but also reduce ignorance within the local population.
He emphasizes that education empowers individuals, granting them dignity and respect. This, in turn, makes them less susceptible to manipulation and better equipped to make informed decisions.
Nyamweno made these remarks on International Literacy Day while speaking in Butere Sub County, underscoring the national government’s emphasis on adult education.
He states, “Education is a fundamental requirement that will help adults manage their resources and empower them economically.” To support this initiative, the government has hired 26 full-time and part-time instructors in the region to enhance learning in various centers.
Additionally, they continue to rely on National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to mobilize learners, a strategy that has resulted in increased enrollment in educational institutions.

Nyamweno highlights a close connection between adult and formal education, noting that educated parents tend to show more concern for their children’s academic performance and enrollment compared to those who are illiterate.
However, he expresses concern about the high levels of insufficient staff to operate existing learning centers and their remote locations.
To address these challenges, Nyamweno urges the government to increase the number of tutors and establish additional centers closer to learners, enhancing convenience. The World Literacy Day event, attended by departmental heads led by area Deputy County Commissioner Hassan Hussein and other stakeholders, carries the theme “Promoting literacy for a sustainable and peaceful Kenyan society.” This theme reflects the broader goal of improving the well-being of the community.
