MOE Dual Vocational Education and Training
Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (SD-TVET), reported substantial advancements in the integration of TVET institutions with industries in Kenya to implement dual training.
During the monitoring and evaluation reporting on TVET key priority areas exercise held at Siaya Institute of Technology in Siaya County, the PS stated that SD-TVET, in partnership with GIZ, has linked numerous TVET institutions with industries, and that these institutions are currently training for and with the industries.
The PS stated that they intend to ensure that TVET institutions produce graduates who are completely qualified to compete on the job market through training with the industry.
She implied that thoroughly implementing CBET in the country’s TVET institutions would turn Kenya into the Singapore of Africa.
“I am confident that once dual training and Competency Based Training (CBET) is fully implemented in this country, Kenya will be the Singapore of Africa,” said the PS.
She called on TVET Principals to abandon the practice of doing things in the same manner as in the past simply because that is how things were done in the past.
“You cannot continue doing things in the same way and expect different results, let’s have a change of mindset and embrace CBET implementation in our institutions” indicated the PS.
She mentioned that it is the responsibility of the institutions to properly admit students, train them, evaluate them, and certify them.
Dr. Muoria also suggested that KUCCP’s portal will remain accessible for walk-in students in TVET institutions, who make up the majority of the institution’s intakes.
What is Dual VET?
Dual Vocational Education and Training (Dual VET) is a unique, competency-based system that offers numerous benefits for both companies and trainees.
Dual VET primarily focuses on providing practical training within companies. This means trainees learn specialized practical skills and gain invaluable occupational experience directly in the workplace.
Currently, 20 TVET institutions in the Nairobi region are implementing dual training, and an additional 63 TVET institutions across the nation are scheduled to implement dual training.
The vocational schools complement this by providing the necessary theoretical knowledge. In this article, we explore all about this innovative approach to education and how you can get involved.
What advantages does Dual VET offer a company?
The company will gain highly competent employees who meet its requirements (as opposed to hiring externally), increase productivity and product quality, reduce recruitment and retraining expenses, and realize a high return on investment over the long term.
What are the benefits for trainees of the Dual TVET program?
MOE Dual Vocational Education and Training
The trainee will acquire occupational proficiency, learn in a real and state-of-the-art work environment (machinery, work processes), learn how to identify with the company and occupation, and become qualified and certified to access various occupational and educational opportunities.
How do I enroll in the Training of Trainers program?
Contact AHK Eastern Africa if you are interested in the ToT course. This training is available to all trainers involved in vocational training in Kenya, as well as any human resources or management personnel interested in training or devising training plans.
