MoE Announces 18 PHD & 19 Masters Scholarships in the UK

The Ministry of Education (MoE), through its state department of higher education and research, has announced the availability of eighteen (18) PhD and nineteen (19) Masters full scholarships for Kenyan citizens. These scholarships are being offered in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the United Kingdom.

According to the ministry’s notice, the scholarships are valid for enrollment at any approved UK University or Higher Education Institution that has a part-funding agreement with the CSC. The application process will commence on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, and will remain open until Tuesday, October 17th, 2023.

Eligibility requirements are specified for both Master’s and PhD studies:

Master’s Study:

a) Verification of Kenyan citizenship

b) A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of a 2nd class upper division from a recognized university, demonstrating a strong academic foundation

c) Endorsement from two (2) referees

d) Submission of a well-defined research proposal within the chosen field of study, highlighting potential contributions to Kenya’s development

e) Presentation of a high-quality study plan

PhD Study:

a) Confirmation of Kenyan citizenship

b) Possession of a Master’s Degree from a recognized university, indicating a robust academic background

c) Letters of support from two (2) referees

d) A letter of endorsement from a supervisor affiliated with a UK Institution

e) A comprehensive research proposal outlining potential impacts on Kenya’s development

f) Detailed study plan

The available fields of study include Agriculture, Healthcare, Housing and Settlement, Digital and Creative Economy, and Transformation of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.

Applying for the scholarships involves the following steps:

1. Complete the online application process for the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission in the UK, following the instructions on the CSC’s official website. After online submission, download and print a copy of the application for further submission to the CSC.

2. Obtain the STANDARD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORM from the Ministry of Education’s official website or from the Directorate of Higher Education offices.

3. Fill out the Standard Scholarship Application Form and attach certified supporting documents such as identification, academic/professional certificates, transcripts, Birth Certificate, Passport, and other relevant testimonials. Include a research proposal related to the chosen field of study and a copy of the online-submitted CSC application form.

4. Submit three (3) sets of the completed hard copy of the Standard Scholarship Application form along with the CSC application form and required certified copies to the Directorate of Higher Education at the provided address or deliver the materials in person during office hours.

5. The Ministry must receive copies of completed online applications no later than 5:00 pm on October 19th, 2023.
