Mobile Laboratories to Address Junior Secondary School Crisis
An innovative investor has taken the initiative to construct and distribute mobile laboratories that promote Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) learning in order to address the educational problem faced by Junior Secondary Schools in Embu County and its environs.
The business behind this creative solution, Science Lab Limited, intends to relieve the load on schools that are unable to build and outfit laboratories, particularly in rural areas.
The business also manufactures chemicals, reagents, and laboratory supplies in addition to mobile labs.
Functionality & Features of Mobile Labs
These portable labs are presented as wooden tables with metal frames, according to Leaky Kipkosgey, the sales agent at Science Lab Limited’s Embu branch.
A 13 kg gas cylinder, burners, taps, water taps, a drainage system and lighting fixtures are all included in each lab’s setup.
These mobile labs, which cost Sh45,000 each, can accommodate eight to twelve students at once and enable experimentation in topics including biology, physics, and chemistry.

Flexibility and cost-effectiveness
Kipkosgey highlighted the adaptability of these “labs without walls,” emphasising their capacity to be used in both indoor and outdoor environments.
This portable laboratory is advantageous since it may be used within a classroom or outside in the open, saving a school from having to construct a laboratory building if it is insufficient.
If a school lacks the funding to build a specialised laboratory structure, this portable option eliminates that necessity.
These mobile laboratories are a great solution for schools with limited infrastructure and resources due to their portability and affordability.
These portable workstations were promoted by Joseph Munyi, a salesperson for Science Lab Limited, as a solution for congested classrooms.
He urged the government to subsidise the purchase of these mobile labs by schools, creating a more favourable learning environment.

Improving STEM education and practical abilities
The branch manager, Marina Njoki, emphasised how well suited these labs are for junior secondary and day secondary schools.
They are an effective tool for giving kids practical STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills because of their portability.
These labs are useful for enhancing classroom instruction and bridging the gap in schools where opportunities for laboratory experiments are lacking, according to the expert.
