Ministry to Convert Schools into Sports Academies, Increase Number of teams in East African Secondary Games.
In an effort to improve the standard of sports in the country, the government, through the Ministry of Sports and Kenya Academy of Sports, revealed plans to increase from two to three the number of teams competing in the East African secondary school games.
This is excellent news for teachers and schools in light of the increasing competition in the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSA) games, which has seen big names miss out as emerging schools surprise in the Kakamega competition.
Dr. Belio Kipsang, principal secretary of the State Department for Basic Education, lauded teachers during this year’s KSSSA national competition in Kakamega for incorporating co-curricular activities into education in accordance with new CBC requirements.
“The government, via the sports fund, will collaborate with the Kenya Sports Academy to fund all national sports competitions in order to identify and cultivate more talent. This will allow institutions to produce more heroes to emulate the likes of Mariga, Wanyama, and Faith Kiyegon, among others, said Dr. Kipsang.
The PS said the government will convert some schools into sports academies in accordance with the Competency-Based Curriculum and in an effort to increase Kenya’s prospects of hosting the 2027 Afcon.
Even though Kenya hopes to host Afcon 2027 and the World Under-19 Athletics Championships this year, the Ministry says it has already identified institutions that will be converted into sports academies.

Dr. Kipsang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing sporting activities to generate revenue for the country and provide employment opportunities for millions of talented youth.
The PS urged instructors to increase sporting events to accommodate all students, noting that sports help shape students into well-rounded future citizens.
