MoE to set Dress code for all Level of Education
According to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER), the Ministry of Education (MoE) needs to create a dress code policy for all levels of education.
The committee presented this recommendation to President William Ruto on August 1, 2023.
The committee found that school uniforms can be expensive for parents due to schools colluding with uniform suppliers, which can force parents to purchase from a single supplier.
This recommendation comes after the government banned the sale of school uniforms a few months prior.
In January, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria criticized schools for making money from the uniform industry.
He stated that the Ministry of Education has made it clear that schools should not sell uniforms, and parents are free to buy them from any source they prefer.
In March, Gathoni Wamuchomba, the representative for Githunguri, introduced a motion to make school uniforms affordable for all students in private and public schools.
She argued that requiring parents to fund specific school accounts for uniforms excludes many children whose parents cannot afford it.
Wamuchomba proposed that the Ministry of Education create a policy for standardizing and producing school uniforms nationwide.
