Ministry of Education Revises School Fees Upwards for 2024/2025

Secondary School Fees Increased

The secondary school fees structure for all schools in Kenya in 2024 is set to increase, following a proposed review. This move comes as education in Kenya faces scrutiny due to various factors. Principals of secondary schools have raised concerns about pressures from suppliers due to delays in the government’s release of free learning funds.

Additionally, the high cost of living in the country has prompted school principals to propose a school fee increment for 2024. It’s worth noting that parents of students in free day schools may have to start contributing for the first time in 15 years.

University students can also expect changes in their tuition fees, as a review has been proposed. The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (Kessha) has suggested a fee increase for all categories of secondary schools, starting in 2024.

Parents and guardians with children in county and extra county schools are likely to see the highest fee subscriptions, with school fees rising from Sh40,535 to Sh66,023 per year, representing an instant increase of KSh25,488. This change may affect learners in day schools, who make up around 70% of all secondary school students and have enjoyed free tuition.

Kessha has recommended another fee increment of KSh19,628 for learners in national schools, who will be required to pay Sh73,182, up from Sh53,554. The reasons behind these proposals include issues such as hampered school operations, accumulated debts, and challenges in infrastructure development.

This secondary school fees increase follows the disclosure that university students will need to contribute a percentage of their tuition fees starting in the next year. The initial promises of fully funding education for economically vulnerable students are now being restricted, and free education may be limited to primary and junior school segments only.

As of the closure of the 2023 school calendar, secondary school learners were paying Sh22,244 per year. However, there have been instances where the government provided less money to schools, causing operational complications.
