Mikel Arteta makes a brutal disclosure regarding his future with Arsenal after a “very tough” summer

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted that he contemplated resigning after his team blew a golden opportunity to win the championship last season.

In light of Arsenal’s failure to win the Premier League title last season, Mikel Arteta revealed that he contemplated his future during the offseason.

Last season, under the leadership of the Spaniard, his team emerged as a surprise title contender and entered the concluding weeks of the season with a five-point lead over Manchester City.

But the Gunners surrendered their advantage by falling points in three consecutive matches against Liverpool, West Ham, and Southampton, giving City the ideal opportunity to retain their championship.

And Arteta has now acknowledged that Arsenal’s late collapse caused him to question his position during the beginning of his postseason break.

Arteta made the following statement prior to Sunday’s Community Shield final:

“The first few weeks, very tough. The first thing you have to do is look in the mirror and understand – is there something that you should have done better or differently? If that is the case then learn from it.

“Judge yourself: ‘Are you still the right person to drive the club, the team, forwards in the way that you want and do you have that energy and that belief that you want to do it?’. It took a big reflection, but the answer is yes and I feel with a lot of energy and positiveness.”

Arsenal’s disastrous finish to the season destroyed their chances of winning their first domestic championship since 2004. Arteta continued by stating that his team “should have won” the three games that ultimately terminated their title hopes.

In the summer, Mikel Arteta questioned his role at Arsenal.

He added: “We had games that we didn’t win, especially the three draws that we had when momentum shifted. We should have won those games and we had enough to win those games – it was in our hands.

“They were key moments when we just weren’t ruthless enough, clinical enough, didn’t have the luck or we made certain mistakes that allowed that to happen. We have to recognise that as well.”

Sunday’s Community Shield match against Manchester City is an early opportunity for Arsenal and Arteta to exact revenge on Pep Guardiola and co.

The season opener will be contested at Wembley Stadium less than a week before Arsenal’s league opener against Nottingham Forest.

Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, and Kai Havertz have arrived at the Emirates for a combined fee of more than £200 million as part of Arteta’s effort to sustain Arsenal’s return to the Premier League’s upper tier.

The Gunners will return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season after finishing in the top four.
