After Atalanta rejected both of Manchester United’s previous proposals for Rasmus Hojlund, the Red Devils have reportedly devised a novel strategy to reach an agreement with the player.

United’s pursuit of Erik ten Hag, who desired a new striker for the upcoming season, was formalized by the submission of multiple proposals.

John Murtough, United’s director of football, is proceeding with caution in the transfer market this summer due to the ambiguity surrounding the club’s transfer budget resulting from the ongoing takeover process. Therefore, it is doubtful that the club’s hierarchy will meet Atalanta’s reported £68 million asking price for the 20-year-old forward.

Murtough is contemplating using Mason Greenwood as a potential makeweight to convince Atalanta to sell their prized asset for a lower price. According to The Daily Mail, United’s football director has discussed the possibility of the Englishman temporarily relocating to Serie A during his discussions with Hojlund.

The Bergamo club would need a new goalscorer if Hojlund, who scored nine goals in 32 league appearances last season, were to leave. Gian Piero Gasperini could do much worse than to substitute Greenwood for the teenager.

United would also welcome a short-term solution to their dilemma regarding what to do with the controversial forward, whose £75,000 per week contract has two years remaining.

In Hojlund, Ten Hag will acquire a forward who could pose a formidable threat in transition due to his sheer speed and strength – characteristics that have drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

“As I’ve said many times before, I wouldn’t want to be compared to him because he’s a monster, he’s crazy!” the former Sturm Graz star responded in an interview with the Austrian Bundesliga (via The Athletic).

“I can see the similarities: he’s fast, I’m also fast; he’s left-footed, I’m also left-footed; he’s strong and I’m strong, too. I hope that I can reach his level, but I’ll need to train very hard and be even more focused on the pitch.”
