Man Utd Eye Ex-PL Defender as Transfer Plans Take a Twist.
Manchester United are reportedly preparing a surprise move for Nayef Aguerd, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes. The Red Devils aimed to secure a left-sided defender last summer to provide cover for Lisandro Martínez, with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite emerging as their top target. Despite submitting two formal bids, United failed to reach an agreement with the Merseyside club.
In the winter transfer window, they brought in Ayden Heaven from Arsenal, but given his young age, he remains a long-term prospect rather than an immediate solution. Now, with Martínez sidelined due to injury, Ruben Amorim finds himself with only one natural left-footed centre-back in Heaven. While Luke Shaw can deputize in that role, his recurring injury struggles have left United short of options.
Fichajes claims United have reignited their pursuit of a left-sided defender and have been impressed by Aguerd’s performances in La Liga this season. The Moroccan international, currently on loan at Real Sociedad from West Ham United, has attracted interest from the Spanish club, who are keen to secure him on a permanent basis. However, United’s interest has now complicated Sociedad’s plans.
Aguerd is valued at approximately £29 million by Transfermarkt and has two years remaining on his contract with West Ham. Consequently, the East London club is expected to demand a significant transfer fee to sanction his departure in the summer window.
The 28-year-old defender, standing at 6ft 2in, possesses strong aerial ability, is composed when playing out from the back, and excels in defensive positioning. His ability to read the game effectively makes him a valuable asset. Should United acquire him, he would bring much-needed experience to their defensive setup.

While Aguerd could strengthen the squad, Amorim’s side needs additional proven talents to bolster their rebuild and meet their long-term objectives. It remains to be seen whether the Premier League giants will formalize their interest and launch an official bid for the Moroccan defender in the upcoming transfer window.
After being eliminated from the FA Cup last weekend, United are set to face Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 on Thursday night. With Aguerd likely to feature, the Red Devils will closely assess his performances during these encounters as they weigh up a potential summer move.
