Man Utd Confirm Bruno Fernandes as New Club Captain, Replacing Maguire
Bruno Fernandes, a midfielder, has been named the new club captain for the upcoming season by Manchester United.
The Portuguese international replaces England’s international central defender Harry Maguire, who was replaced after discussions with manager Erik ten Hag earlier in the week. Since joining the United team in January 2020, Fernandes has been an integral member.

Bruno Fernandes has been named Manchester United’s new club captain.
Earlier in the week, former captain Harry Maguire verified on Twitter that he had been stripped of the position by manager Erik ten Hag, with the England international linked to a move to Newcastle United or West Ham.
Maguire had been one of the first-choice defenders since his 2019 arrival from Leicester City under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but fell out of favour under Ten Hag, who preferred Lisandro Martinez and Raphael as his first-choice pairing, and frequently gave Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof the nod over the 30-year-old.
Ten Hag has since replaced him as captain, and Fernandes, a Portuguese national, has been verified as his replacement.
Since joining United in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon, the 28-year-old attacking midfielder has been one of the club’s most reliable and outstanding players.
He has tallied 64 goals in 185 appearances for the club and helped the club win the EFL Cup last season, their first trophy under Ten Hag.
On its official website, the club stated:

“Fernandes has scored 64 goals and contributed 54 assists in just 185 games for the club since joining in 2020.
