Man United’s £51m Bid for Antonio Rudiger
Manchester United has reportedly entered the race to sign Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger, preparing an opening proposal of £51 million for the player.
The 30-year-old could be poised for a quick return to the Premier League after leaving Chelsea at the conclusion of his contract last summer and joining Real Madrid in Spain.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost the 2022-23 La Liga championship to formidable rivals Barcelona, with the Germany international starting 26 times out of 33 league appearances.
Despite some impressive performances, especially against Manchester City and Erling Haaland in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, the center-back was not a lock to start for the 14-time European champions.
Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £51 million bid for Rudiger this summer, as Erik ten Hag seeks to build a squad capable of competing in four competitions next season.
After a one-year absence, the Red Devils will return to UEFA’s premier club competition after winning the EFL Cup and finishing third in the Premier League in Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.
With Rudiger’s contract at the Bernabeu continuing through the summer of 2026, it will likely take a substantial offer for Madrid to part ways with the defender.
It is believed that United hope to entice the German to England by promising him regular first-team action, something that Ancelotti cannot guarantee due to the partnership between David Alaba and Eder Militao.
The Red Devils are reportedly willing to offer Rudiger more lucrative personal terms than he currently obtains in Spain, and Ten Hag is eager to add another prominent defender to his roster.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were United’s favoured central-defensive pairing last season, helping David De Gea to 17 clean sheets in the Premier League and earning him the league’s Golden Glove award in his final season with the club.
The pursuits of Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund from Serie A are nearing their respective conclusion as the summer transfer window progresses for Manchester United.
Ten Hag’s squad reportedly hopes to sign the Inter Milan goalkeeper by the end of the week, with the Cameroonian slated to succeed the departed David de Gea as the club’s starting goalkeeper.
United are poised to submit an improved offer for the Danish forward Hojlund of Atalanta BC in the coming days. Hojlund is a top target for the manager.
Mason Mount, a former Chelsea player, could make his début for his new team against Leeds United on Wednesday in a preseason match.
