Despite signing Andre Onana earlier this summer, Manchester United is reportedly prepared to offer close to €70 million to acquire the services of Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester United are preparing a €70 million bid for FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as they seek to overhaul their goalkeeping department following David de Gea’s departure this summer.

The Red Devils have already spent £43 million to acquire Andre Onana from Inter Milan, with Erik ten Hag viewing him as David de Gea’s replacement.

However, with Dean Henderson set to join Nottingham Forest and Everton and Luton Town offering opportunities for 37-year-old Tom Heaton to start regularly next season, the club has been exploring options to maintain competition for places.

The Red Devils have been monitoring 20-year-old Urawa Red Diamonds goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir as potential low-cost replacements for Onana.

However, according to Fichajes, Ten Hag intends to add Diogo Costa of Porto “to further raise the competitive level” of his goalkeeping unit.

Man United will be willing to pay an astronomical €70 million to acquire Diego Costa this summer.

The 23-year-old was a key member of Sergio Conceicao’s squad last season, keeping 20 clean sheets in 41 matches across all competitions as the Portuguese giants finished second behind Benfica in the Primeira Liga standings.

He is widely regarded as one of the game’s best young goalkeepers and has been closely monitored by Europe’s elite for some time.

His performances have earned him the number one position in the Portugal national team, where he is now favored over the venerable Rui Patricio.

With four years remaining on his current Porto contract, the Portugal international has a release clause worth approximately €75 million.

This rumor is completely nonsensical and should be taken with a grain of salt.

have long admired Costa, but this rumor smells like it was planted by the player’s agent to drum up interest in his client, or that the selling club is desperate to offload their prized asset to prospective suitors at a bargain price due to financial strain.

Although depth in every department is essential for a club of Manchester United’s stature, they must limit their expenditure this summer due to Financial Fair Play regulations and prolonged takeover rumors.

After spending a significant portion of their fixed budget on Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund (imminent), they are already in sell-to-buy mode and cannot afford to spend €70 million on a backup goalkeeper when other areas of the squad, such as defensive midfield, require proper attention first.

Recent reports indicate that Manchester United may pursue Sofyan Amrabat of Fiorentina, who excelled during Morocco’s run to the Qatar 2022 World Cup semifinals and would cost approximately £30 million.

However, the move for the defensive midfielder is only feasible near the end of the transfer window if the club raises sufficient funds through player sales.
