The Education Ministry has confirmed few cases of examination irregularities and malpractices that have so far been witnessed in the continuing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
More than 30 schools allegedly planning to cheat in the Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) have been listed by the Education Ministry.
Candidates Sneak Phones Into The Exam Room
8 candidates were found with mobile phones in examination rooms. The phones were confiscated from various centers according to the Education CS Magoha.
Already eight culprits are with the authorities as investigations continue. “We want to find out what are in the phones,” Magoha said on Thursday.
Yesterday statements emerged of how a Head Boy in Busia county uncovered a cheating ring in his school leading to the arrest of two Form 4 candidates and a university student.
According to police, the senior student was moving around when he found the candidates aged 17 and 20, using their smartphones. He immediately informed the school management over the students’ secret operations which led to the recovery of the devices.
Detectives based in the county said that the phones contained questions and answers to some of the papers.
Exam Peddlers Selling ‘Fake Papers’ To Parents
Magoha warned parents against buying fake papers that are circulating in the market.
“There are people selling fake papers. Parents, do not be duped to buy these papers. There is no exam that has leaked,” he said.
He expressed his satisfaction with the examination process adding that all elaborate guidelines have been followed.
On Monday, Magoha said Kisii county, Homa Bay and parts of Isebania, were cheating hotspots that were being closely monitored.
Officials Oppens Papers Before Time
Early leakage of KCSE exam papers to candidates is the new headache facing the Education ministry in its efforts to curb cheating. Magoha says some officials are opening the papers minutes before the exam start time, give the questions to teachers who in turn share them with the candidates.
“Unprofessional examination officials expose the exams a little earlier than the scheduled time. The questions are then shared to the targeted candidates just before the examinations start,” Magoha said.
On Tuesday, March 30, an invigilator and three other teachers including a school principal were arrested in Migori county by education officials for sharing some of the exam papers to assist the candidates to revise ahead of the scheduled time.
The teachers have so far denied accusations of engaging in examination malpractice, maintaining they were innocent. They will be detained at Kamagambo Police Station as investigations contiues.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) termed the start of the exams last Friday a success. KCSE exams will end on April 21.
