The Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof George Magoha has praised the phasing out of the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree program, that would qualify teachers to teach in Secondary schools.
While replying to journalists after unveiling a three classroom block at Sagam Secondary school in Siaya County, Magoha stated that the move by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for teachers to undertake a Bachelor of Science course accompanied by a one-year postgraduate diploma in Education will furnish teachers with the right skills to teach CBC in Secondary schools.
The Bachelor of Education (B.ED) program has been the course for Kenya Secondary school teachers since 1972. In comprehensive reforms to ensure the seamless rollout of the Competence-based curriculum (CBC), the commission wants all universities to stop offering the course within months.
TSC proposes that students who wish to pursue a teaching career will take regular ARTS or SCIENCE degrees accompanied by a one-year post-graduate diploma in education to qualify for registration as teachers
