List of TVET Colleges Elevated to National Polytechnics
Thirteen Technical and Vocational Colleges have been upgraded to the status of National Polytechnics, aiming to enhance higher education accessibility. This decision emerged from Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting held at the Kakamega State Lodge, led by President William Ruto.
The move aligns with the principles outlined in Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2005: A Framework for Education, Training, and Research, which establishes a trajectory for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates’ advancement, as per an official statement following the meeting.
As a first step towards achieving this nationwide objective, various educational institutions have been granted National Polytechnic status, including the Maasai Technical Training Institute, Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology, Coast Institute of Technology, Tseikuru Technical and Training College, and Sang’alo Institute of Science and Technology. Additionally, other institutions that received elevation include Bureti Technical Vocational College, Jeremiah Nyagah Technical Training Institute, Mawego Technical Training Institute, and Baringo Technical Training Institute.
This Cabinet decision is in line with the guidelines set forth in Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2005, known as “A Framework for Education, Training, and Research.” This framework serves as the basis for facilitating the progress of TVET graduates, ensuring their mobility within the education sector.

The communication also underscores that this policy necessitates the establishment of at least one National Polytechnic in each county, along with a dedicated TVET institution in every constituency.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto has allocated Sh100 million for the ongoing construction of the Ebunangwe Technical Training Institute. During a visit to Ebunangwe in Emuhaya Sub-county, the President emphasized that this institute will be one of three in the nation responsible for training TTI (Technical Training Institute) tutors.
President Ruto committed to completing the institution promptly, ensuring its operational readiness. He noted that only three TTIs across the country would be responsible for training teachers for other TTIs nationwide. He acknowledged the local representative’s efforts to ensure the institute serves all Kenyan citizens.
