The Teachers Service Commission holds a constitutional mandate encompassing the registration, hiring, promotion, transfer, and disciplinary control of teachers in both primary and secondary schools across the country. In anticipation of World Teachers Day, a global celebration honoring educators, the Commission has devised plans to recognize and celebrate Kenyan teachers.

UNESCO designated October 5 as World Teachers Day in 1994, commemorating a significant moment in the history of education. On October 5, 1966, an intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris adopted the UNESCO/ILO recommendation concerning the Status of teachers in collaboration with ILO, marking a pivotal advancement for educators worldwide.

On October 5 of this year, the Teachers Service Commission intends to reward 500 teachers who have made notable contributions in guiding and mentoring the young minds under their care.

The Teachers Service Commissioners, alongside the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Nancy Macharia, will lead the commemorative event, which will be broadcast live on Citizen TV on Thursday morning this week.

In the previous year’s World Teachers Day celebration, CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia expressed gratitude to teachers for their resilience in facing challenges brought about by the dual disruptions of COVID-19 and the general election on August 9, ensuring the continuity of school programs.

This year, teachers find themselves celebrating World Teachers Day amidst financial difficulties, as the cost of living has eroded their purchasing power, leaving them significantly disadvantaged. While the government offered some salary increments, the introduction of the housing levy and NSSF deductions negated these gains, leaving teachers with little cause for celebration.

Additionally, there is a prevailing sentiment that their unions have aligned too closely with the employer, who is perceived as insensitive to their concerns.
