Nchoro and Karungu Secondary Schools in South Mugirango Constituency, Kisii County face the imminent threat of closure due to dwindling student enrollment. At Karungu Secondary School, Deputy Principal Geoffrey Monyancha reported that the school currently has a mere 63 students, distributed across different forms: 12 in Form 1, 15 in Form 2, 15 in Form 3, and 21 in Form 4.

The principal cited the primary cause of this poor enrollment as the insufficient capitation funds provided by the Ministry of Education, which, in turn, push students to opt for schools with better facilities.

Monyancha emphasized that capitation funds are directly tied to student numbers, making it essential for parents to support their local schools rather than favoring institutions with superior infrastructure. The County Education Board (CEB) temporarily shuttered the school during the first term due to a lack of students when it reopened.

Following parental pleas, the school resumed operations with only 50 students, served by nine teachers appointed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

CEB Chairman Prof. Henry Onderi criticized the impractical teacher-to-student ratio as a wasteful allocation of human resources, with idle teachers being paid by the government. Onderi also placed blame on parents for enrolling their children in neighboring schools rather than supporting their community school. In the second term, Prof. Onderi and his team disbanded the school’s management committee due to perceived incompetence.

Consequently, the school has struggled with consistently low student numbers, making its closure increasingly likely. Prof. Onderi stated that they reopened the school for a brief period to allow parents to consult and contribute to its support.

However, it appears their efforts have been in vain, leading to the possibility of another closure and the relocation of remaining students to alternative schools.

Concerned parents argue that permanent closure would place a significant burden on students in the area, who would have to travel long distances to access neighboring schools. They have appealed to the area MP, Sylivanus Osoro, to utilize the constituency’s NG-CDF (National Government Constituency Development Fund) resources to enhance the infrastructure of these schools.
