In Lanet in Nakuru County is where you can find the National Defence University of Kenya (NDU-K). On May 27, 2021, George Magoha, a former education minister, granted the institution a charter.

A long-held goal of NDU-K’s was to provide higher education to General Service Officers (GSOs) both domestically and abroad.

NDU-K offers certifications, diplomas, and degrees in fields relating to defence and security, making it the first institution of its kind in the area.

Security analysts claim that when it comes to developing security institutions that provide strategic training for security personnel in the East African area, Kenya has continuously been at the forefront of the pack.

It was the first nation to create the National Defence University, a staff college, and a national defence college.

The country’s investment in military education, according to retired general Robert Kibochi, is necessary to remain ahead of emerging dangers, he said in one of his addresses.

The National Intelligence Research University institution (NIRUC), a constituent institution of the National Defence University, was founded in June 2021.

The National Defence College (NDC), the Defence Staff College (DSC), the Kenya Military Academy (KMA), the Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC), and the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) are all KDF schools and institutions that fall under the umbrella organisation of the NDU-K.

President William Ruto, who serves as the head of the Kenya Defence Forces, is the university’s chancellor.

The university council, which is presided over by General Francis Ogolla, Chief of the Defence Forces, is the top decision-making body in terms of administration and management.

Courses

The following courses are available through the National Defence University:

  1. Studies in Defence and Security as a Bachelor of Science
  2. Information Technology for Defence Systems Bachelor of Science
  3. Masters of Arts in Disaster and Crisis Response
  4. National Security and Strategy Masters of Arts
  5. Postgraduate Certificate in Strategic and Defence Studies

Both domestic and foreign students may enrol in the courses.

On December 2, 2022, the university had its inaugural commencement ceremony, during which the first cohort of 177 cadets graduated in a vibrant and historic ceremony officiated by university vice-chancellor Lt. Gen. Jonah Mwangi.

Cadets from Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Mozambique made up the graduating class.

National Defence University

After the NDU-K, the National Defence College is Kenya’s top military training facility.

It was started in 1992 as an alternative to the more expensive overseas training of Kenyan officers.

However, the first course wasn’t made available until July 1977 since creating a proper curriculum was difficult.

Since that time, classes at the college have continued as usual, with an increase in the number of students to include cadets from European, Asian, and African nations.

To provide a better training atmosphere and facilities, the college was relocated to Karen in May 2000.

In order to expand its curriculum, the college joined with the University of Nairobi in 2002 and now offers diploma and master’s degrees in international studies.

National Security and Strategy is a course offered by the National Defence College. Qualified cadets may enrol in the Masters of Arts, Diploma, or Certificate in International Studies programmes after completing this 48-week course.

The college’s 25th commencement exercise was conducted on May 25, 2023, and President William Ruto officiated.
