Leaders from Busia county are raising concerns over the low turnout of teachers receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
They say that despite teachers being given priority, only less than 2000 teachers have received their first dose while close to 800 have received the second dose.
Nelson Andaje, the coordinator of Busia County Medical Services claim low turnout has been attributed to numerous myths circulating about the Covid-19 vaccines that have swayed teachers into dismissing it.
The leaders led by Kipchumba Rutto, DCC Busia also say that because of Busia’s shared border with Uganda residents are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.
“There are rumours on misconceptions that the vaccine will make you not be fatter if you’re a woman, there are rumours that if you’re a man you may not be able to perform as a man, Said Nelson Andaje.
Last month, a teacher from the school died in what was believed to be Covid-19 complications while another one is said to be admitted to a hospital outside the county.
This comes as Six teachers in Nyeri High School tested positive for Covid-19 last week.
“Of the 16 teachers tested, six turned positive, all of them had mild cases and were managed at home,” said Nyeri Health Services director Nelson Muriu on Thursday.
In March, four students from Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls High School also tested positive for the virus while on July 10, 85 students and a teacher at Ngorano Mixed Day and Boarding Secondary School were diagnosed with the virus.
“AllTeachers should be vaccinated because they are at a greater risk of contracting the COVID-19 Virus,” says the Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.
