Latest Salary  Update  Per county For ECDE Teachers

Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers have been one of the groups of educators demanding salary reviews lately. In response to the push, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has listed the proposed figures for ECDE instructors in the different counties.

According to the SRC, ECDE teachers should have a minimum monthly wage of Ksh 14,961-Ksh 15,842 in Nairobi (Cluster 1) and Ksh 13,211-Ksh 14,092 in other counties (Cluster 4). The figures were arrived at with considerations of the ability to pay bills by county administrations over the long term.

The SRC has further revealed that studies suggesting ECDE teachers are paid below the minimum legal wage are not accurate. The figures used in the studies represent basic pay and not the instructors’ gross earnings.

Permanent Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, recently urged the Senate committee to intervene on behalf of ECDE teachers. Dr. Kipsang called for a harmonized pay structure that eliminates the disparities between the compensation of contract-based and permanent ECDE instructors.

The following are the current county-level salaries for ECDE teachers:

1. Uasin Gishu County – Untrained 23,000/-; Certificate 31,000/-; Diploma 35,000/-; Degree 55,000/-

2. Kakamega County – Certificate 23,000/-; Diploma 25,000/-; Degree 30,000/-

3. Garissa County – Certificate 45,000/-; Diploma 67,000/-; Degree Not applied

4. Kericho County – Certificate 26,000/-; Diploma 36,000/-; Degree 48,000/-

5. Homa Bay County – Certificate 15,000/-; Diploma 23,000/-; Degree Not applied

6. Kitui County – Certificate 27,000/-; Diploma 32,000/-; Degree 50,000/-

7. Nyamira County – Certificate 15,000/-; Diploma 18,000/-; Degree Not applied

8. Narok County – Certficate 27,000/-; Diploma 33,000/-; Degree Not applied

9. Bomet County – Certificate 13,000/-; Diploma 16,000/-; Degree 21,000/-

10. Marsabit County – Certificate 28,500/-; Diploma 36,000/-; Degree 50,000/-

11. Kajiado County – Certificate 32,000/-; Diploma 36,000/-; Degree Not applied

12. Nandi County – Certificate 12,000/-; Diploma 15,000/-; Degree Not applied

It is hoped that the ongoing pay review cycle by SRC, expected in June 2023, will lead to a favorable outcome for ECDE teachers
