Labor ministry initiates talks with KNUT to stop looming strike over feud with TSC

The Labour Ministry has initiated talks with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) over the latest strike threat. The teachers union threatened to strike over feud with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Labor Cabinet Secretary Simon Kiprono Chelugui said his ministry is making progress in reaching an agreement with the union to top the looming strike.

According to KNUT, the expected strike is to take place in January when schools reopen to protest the unfair treatment by the teachers’ employes. The strike is to force TSC to honour the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The commission unilaterally refused to comply with the CBA effective July 1, 2019, and intentionally denied Knut members promotions and salary increment. KNUT has also accused TSC of mutilating Knut membership register.

The Industrial Court directed TSC not to temper with union rights of all school administrators; to liaise with Knut to validate Teachers Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) tools. The commission has instead proceeded to execute TPAD in total disregard of the court direction.

The court also ordered both TSC and Knut to engage to come up with an agreeable TPD policy. To date, zero efforts have been realised as TSC failed to schedule meetings for the same according to the union.
