The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers has called on the Education ministry to increase funds for special needs students.
KUSNET secretary-general James Torome said the union is focused on service delivery for special needs teachers as well as students.
He made the points during the KUSNET elections in Narok County after retaining his seat unopposed over the weekend.
“I call upon the Ministry of Education to ensure that students are provided with proper infrastructure to have easy access to classrooms and other amenities within their schools,” said Torme.
He announced that the government has already allocated funds for infrastructure in schools and no one should misappropriate the money meant for special groups.
The SG further called on union members to hold their horses concerning their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), insisting that the union will make a major announcement tomorrow, July 1.
Early this month, KUSNET signed a recognition agreement with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Naivasha. About 4,000 teachers with special needs, some of whom were in Kuppet and Knut, have since decamped to KUSNET.
“The Commission hereby affords full recognition of the union as the body representing interests of special needs education teachers in the employment of the Commission and who are paid up members of the Union and teachers with special needs in the employment of the Commission and who are paid up members of the union,” reads the recognition agreement between TSC and Kusnet.
The union has more than 9,000 teachers and is targeting 18,000.
