KUPPET Issues 7-day ultimatum to KNEC to pay teachers who marked KCPE and KCSE 2020 exams

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to pay examiners.

Teachers who marked the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) are yet to receive their payments from KNEC.

The union says, despite teachers working under extreme conditions and pressure from the Ministry of Education, they have not been paid their dues. The union is now demanding that the examiners be paid immediately.

“To add insult to injury the council is currently reviewing its regulations to further overburden teachers by merging examination centres and cutting back on the already poor compensation on scripts.

“The proposed major of national examination centers will be counter-productive to the effect to effective management of the examinations

The union warned that the merger would erode the autonomy of schools, increase the instances of examiners travel and undermine the security of submission materials.

The primary school heads who acted as Centre Managers for KCPE exams are expecting to get their daily subsistence allowance of Sh500, for a total of 4 days which include rehearsal day.

KNEC however failed to consider the payment for Deputy Head Teachers and Deputy Principals who were present throughout the examination period as assistant Centre Managers.

Teachers who handled science subjects, prepared and administered practicals during the KCSE examinations will however also not receive a penny.

The 2020 marking exercise was marked under extreme pressure with teachers working day and night for more than 8 hours.

KUPPET warns that failure to pay teachers within the seven days, it will call for a demonstration at the KNEC headquarters.
