Kuppet issue Ultimatum To KNEC over Delayed Pay

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has given the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) an ultimatum of one week’s notice for them to provide their stipend for marking National Exams. The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) is responsible for conducting national exams in Kenya.

According to Julius Korir, who serves as the Deputy Chairperson, the KNEC has used them in the past, and they are not going to let this practise continue.

They have taken advantage of our teachers, which is something that we won’t stand for, so we want the Kenyan National Examination Council to start paying them as soon as possible. According to Korir, “We want the council to call us within the next week so that we can solve the issue, otherwise they will see something that they have never seen before.”

Moses Nthurima, the Deputy Secretary General for KUPPET, expressed his sentiments when he requested the teachers not to mark the next National Exams because of the late payments. His sentiments were shared by the instructors.

“We are asking the council not to exploit our teachers because they have not received their payments from the previous year, and we want to tell our teachers to stay away from Marking this year’s Exams because the council has not yet taken any responsibility,” he added. “We are asking the council not to exploit our teachers because they have not received their payments from the previous year.”

In addition to this, they want the KNEC to discuss with them the payment rates and methods that are in the teachers’ best interests.

In addition to this, they demanded that their pay be brought in line with that of their secretariat from the Teachers Service Commission.

Since the beginning of this decade, the secretariat at the TSC has been earning between 50 and 60 percent more than the teachers in the same job category. These individuals are anticipating a rise in their pay.

We are also members of TSC, and after looking at the numbers, we found that discrimination against teachers has resulted in a loss of 127 billion dollars that the instructors ought to have received,” Nthurima remarked.

On the other hand, they claimed that the process that the TSC employs in order to promote teachers is ineffective.

“The promotions method, also known as the career development system, does not assist the teachers because it is a way that they are unable to comprehend.

They contend that there are no teachers in job groups for senior teachers and that advertisements made by the Teachers Service Commission do not promote teachers. Additionally, they claim that there are no teachers in job groups for elementary teachers.

“Today the commission has an advert that wants teachers to apply for positions and there is no promotion, yet they say that teachers are not taking the administration role,” Nthurima concluded. “How can they say that when they have an advert that wants teachers to apply for positions and there is no promotion?”
