Kuppet gives TSC, SRC until end of July to review salaries

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers has issued a request to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC and Teachers Service Commission, TSC to abide by the wage increments for teachers by the end of the month of July.

The secretary general of the Kuppet union, Akelo Misori, stated that teachers are being overburdened by excessive taxes, which has led to an increase in the cost of living.

This is in spite of the fact that the government has pledged to raise the pay.

“Kuppet demands immediate action by SRC and TSC to conclude the salary increment for teachers that has already been agreed upon between the union and the President,” Misori said. “Kuppet demands immediate action by SRC and TSC.”

“Regrettably, and despite assurances, TSC and SRC are still going round and round in circles, even as teachers suffer under the burden of increased taxes and high inflation.”

At a news conference that took place on Tuesday at the Kuppet offices in Nairobi, Misori delivered his remarks.

He stated that in May, President William Ruto met with the National Governing Council of the union, where he informed them of the government’s resolve to award teachers a wage increase of at least 10 percent upon the adoption of the Finance Bill.

“We have made numerous correspondences with TSC over the review of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and when the President gave it a nod, we thought that Treasury and TSC were aware,” Misori said. “We have made numerous correspondences with TSC over the review of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.”

According to what he said, there will be no more delays, and the TSC must arrange a meeting with Kuppet in order to figure out the increment and have the same thing accounted for in the pay of teachers this month.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers requested that teachers be granted a pay rise of sixty percent in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the years 2021-2025.

According to Collins Oyuu, the union secretary general, the teachers’ remuneration was most recently evaluated in the 2016/2017 school year.

“The teachers received the most recent salary increase in two phases-2016/2017 and 2017/2018 because the increase they were awarded was minimal and it was fully paid in two instalments,” Oyuu stated. “2016/2017 and 2017/2018” are the years in which the teachers received the increases.

He demanded an investigation into the collective bargaining agreement for 2021-25, which had been signed despite the absence of monetary benefits.
