KNUT Urges KNEC Not To Delay Payment Of Invigilators, Supervisors.
In Kisumu, Kenya, on October 30, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) not to delay payments for teachers participating in invigilation, supervision, and marking of the nationwide examinations that commenced on Monday.
Collins Oyuu, the Secretary-General, expressed concerns about KNEC’s historical delay in compensating teachers for their work. He emphasized that teachers have diligently prepared students for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams and should not be subjected to further delays and financial hardships.
“Teachers have fulfilled their responsibilities, and students are currently taking their exams, but KNEC appears to be nonchalant about these examinations. KNEC’s inaction has created a negative attitude among teachers towards these exams,” Oyuu said.

He pointed out that teachers have volunteered their time to aid in the administration of exam papers, often receiving honoraria, which KNEC has failed to disburse promptly, leaving teachers to plead for their payments.
In Siaya County, Oyuu addressed KNEC’s Chief Executive Officer, David Njeng’ere, urging him to address this matter and ensure that teachers receive their dues on time.
Oyuu warned that this time would not be business as usual and demanded timely payments for teachers, emphasizing the Union’s commitment to support teachers during this period.
He also noted that KNEC has a budget allocation for teachers participating in the examination process and questioned why the council consistently delays payments when teachers rightfully request their compensation.
