Due to delays in payment, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is considering recommending to its members that they abstain from taking part in the monitoring of national examinations.

According to Patrick Munuhe, who serves as the chairman of KNUT, it took the government a whole year to pay the teachers who monitored the KCPE, KCSE, and KPSEA examinations the year before.

At the Kenya National Union of Teachers’ (KNUT) annual convention, which was held at Samoei Boys Secondary School, Munuhe disclosed that the payments were still delayed even though they had sent repeated letters to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

According to Munuhe, instructors will only volunteer to serve as invigilators for upcoming national examinations if they are provided with specific instructions on compensation.

He gave KNEC a window of opportunity of two weeks to handle the unpaid invoices, and he warned that if the issue was not fixed, instructors would refuse to invigilate the national exams in 2023.

In the event that payments were not made, KNUT issued threats to organise examiners in order to occupy the KNEC headquarters.

“We have given the examination council two weeks to settle the bills, otherwise they will be held accountable for their actions.” “If the bills aren’t paid, we won’t be able to serve as invigilators for the national exams in 2023,” stated Munuhe.

He was critical of the government’s decision to withhold compensation from teachers despite the fact that they were forced to work in deplorable conditions.

Munuhe emphasised the significance of implementing equitable labour practises, highlighting the significance of compensating workers quickly according to the duties that they have performed.

He made the observation that educators had performed their responsibilities in accordance with the agreement, but in response they had been neglected.
