KNUT SG Collins Oyuu among five appointed to sit in KNQA board

Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), is one of five individuals recently appointed to the board of the Kenya National Qualification Authority. Oyuu’s role is to represent the Central Organization of Trade Union of Kenya (Coyu-K).

The board, as per a gazette notice issued by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on October 17, will also include other notable figures such as the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission for Higher Education in Kenya (CUE), Mike Kuria, and the Director General at Technical and Vocational Training Authority, Dr. Kipkirui Langat. Additionally, the board will consist of Everline Owoko, the Director of Quality Assurance at the Ministry of Education, and Jacqueline Mugo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE).

These appointees are slated to serve a three-year term commencing from October 19 and will operate under the leadership of former Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis, who had been appointed as the chairman of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority earlier in June for a similar three-year period.

Dr. Alice Kande, the acting director general of the Kenya National Qualification Authority, commended the new board members’ appointments and emphasized the importance of their role in ensuring the quality of qualifications from educational institutions. She stressed that their leadership is crucial at a time when the organization is actively working to uphold the quality of qualifications. Furthermore, the team is expected to play a pivotal role in implementing the government’s “Bottom Up Model” and in recognizing prior learning within the qualification body.

Dr. Kande also expressed gratitude to the outgoing team for their contributions in advancing the institution’s pursuit of quality qualifications.

This appointment coincides with the agency’s efforts to establish guidelines for certifying skilled workers without formal education through a program known as the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The RPL initiative is aimed at providing certification to individuals who have acquired expertise through work experience, volunteering, and self-directed learning. Additionally, the Kenya National Qualification Authority has incorporated 26 learning institutions that have been authorized to upload records of their former graduates in the qualification agency’s database as part of the fight against counterfeit certificates. These institutions include universities and technical colleges, particularly polytechnics, and approximately 2,000 programs offered by these institutions have been approved by KNQA.
