KNUT protests mandatory NSSF contributions, SRC role in salaries

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has reiterated its objection to compulsory contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for its members.

KNUT’s National Chairperson, James Karinga, emphasized that the union will focus on implementing reforms to expedite the disbursement of teachers’ retirement benefits, rather than supporting the mandatory NSSF contributions.

KNUT pointed out that its members already contribute to a Provident Fund for their retirement benefits, rendering the NSSF subscriptions unnecessary. Speaking in Nyeri, Karinga stressed that it is crucial for teachers to receive their retirement benefits promptly before leaving their service.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the involvement of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in determining teachers’ pay raises independently of the Collective Bargaining Agreements between the teachers’ unions and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Karinga asserted that any increments in pay should be mutually agreed upon by the teachers’ union and the TSC, and he indicated the union’s intention to disregard any proposals put forth by the SRC in this regard.
