KNUT presents Urgent Demands to TSC on Salaries & Retirements

Patrick Munuhe, the national chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), has called upon the government to enact salary hikes to alleviate the increasing financial burden faced by educators.

In the month of June this year, Munuhe noted that the President issued a directive for a 7–10% salary increase for civil servants.

The purpose of this increase was to offset the impact of various charges, particularly the contentious housing levy. Nonetheless, Munuhe held the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) accountable for actions that hindered the execution of the directive.

Munuhe claimed that this had a detrimental effect on teachers’ income due to deductions from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). He strongly insisted on putting a stop to these NSSF deductions.

In regard to retirement benefits, Munuhe contended that retired educators should receive their rightful payments within three months of retiring.

He cautioned that if this timeframe was not adhered to and if swift salary disbursements weren’t made, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) would face legal repercussions.

Given the rising cost of living, there is an immediate necessity for a thorough reassessment of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and teacher salaries.

Munuhe has expressed significant dissatisfaction with the lack of progress on these matters ever since the TSC discussions in 2021.

Munuhe stressed that the signing of the CBA would not occur until the primary concerns of teachers were dealt with.

“We won’t sign the CBA until these fundamental issues are resolved,” declared Munuhe, underscoring the resolute dedication of teachers to attaining fair conditions.

George Wanjala, the executive secretary of the Knut Trans Nzoia branch, appealed to the TSC to tackle staffing problems, particularly in the Endebess, Chepchoina Chepsiro, Kwanza, and Saboti zones.

Wanjala issued a cautionary statement, noting a noticeable migration of teachers to neighboring counties that offer hardship allowances. He expressed worry that failure to promptly address this matter could lead to disparities among teachers.
