KNUT Demands Salary Increment For Teachers, Clarifies On Strike
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has responded to rumours that teachers across the country are conspiring to go on strike in order to demand higher salaries by stating that this information is untrue.
Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), has stated that the union is working to have a review of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the year of 2021-2025.
“I did not give a notice of any strike, I gave a notice to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to convene a meeting with KNUT to look into the clause of review on the CBA 2021-2025,” he said. “I gave a notice to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to convene a meeting with KNUT to look into the clause of review on the CBA 2021-2025.”
Following their 14-day notification to TSC, Oyuu claimed that they have received a favourable answer from the employer of the teachers.
“TSC has written back to us and they are saying that they are doing all that is possible to make sure that they convene this meeting and address the sticking issues as soon as possible,” he stated.

After addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Kisumu chapter of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Oyuu gave an address at a news conference in Kisumu, where he reassured teachers who are members of the union that they will make all possible effort to address their problems.
Oyuu indicated that the CBA that they signed with TSC for the years 2021-2025 was a cashless arrangement, and that there is no need to renegotiate the agreement in order to incorporate the component of money.
“Remember that some of our teachers made fun of us for signing a maternity CBA; there is a clause in the CBA that gives the parties an opportunity to review what they had signed,” he said. “There is a clause in the CBA that gives the parties an opportunity to review what they had signed.”
Oyuu emphasised that the restriction on reviewing the agreement that they had previously signed that had been placed by the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) had now ended after it had been in place for two years. This had given them the legal right to do so. He also mentioned that they will investigate the CBA in a non-monetary capacity.

KNUT has established parameters for the salary review negotiations and will demand an increase in income to compensate for the proposed reductions in Housing Levy contributions. The wage increase will then cushion the blow that the impending 3 percent deductions will cause to instructors.
