Summary:
- TSC is set to promote 14000 teachers ahead of school reopening in January.
- Move by TSC a big blow to the Sossion led KNUT as TSC is promoting teachers based on career progression guidelines
- 3,986 secondary school teachers will be promoted to the position of Deputy Principal
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has been dealt with another blow over the promotion of teachers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to promote 14000 teachers ahead of school reopening in January.
The Commission is promoting teachers based on career progression guidelines (CPG), a thorny issue that started the current disagreement between members of KNUT and their employer TSC.
TSC has announced secondary school teachers’ promotion vacancies for Senior Lecturer, Senior Master, Curriculum Support Officer, Head Teacher, and Deputy Head Teacher in line with the Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers.
The announcement will see 3,986 deputy principals, 2,111 headteachers in several primary schools, 1,765 deputy headteachers, 6680 senior teachers among other promotions.
The move simply means that KNUT members will not benefit from the advertised promotion as the union is strongly opposed to the promotion of teachers based on CPG.
The module of promotion supported by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) will only benefit teachers affiliated to Kuppet or those who have already ditched KNUT.
KNUT Secretary General Hon Wilson Sossion has threatened to call for a teachers’ strike once learning resumes in January in what it termes as unfair treatment by TSC. The move is likely to paralyze learning next year with Sossion maintaining that Strike is the only language TSC understands best.
