KNUT Calls For Promotion Of Teachers In Job Group C1 and C2
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is constitutionally responsible for various aspects of teacher management in both primary and secondary schools in the country. This includes registering, hiring, promoting, transferring, and exercising disciplinary control over teachers.
In line with its mandate, the TSC should promote teachers who have been in the same job groups for an extended period to motivate them. However, there have been instances where promotions have not occurred as expected, leading to teachers remaining in lower job groups for a long time.

In response to this situation, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has called on the TSC to consider promoting teachers in job groups C1 and C2 to higher job groups. Knut’s leaders have expressed concern that teachers in these job groups have been stuck for a prolonged period and that automatic promotions from these levels could help fast-track their career progression and boost their morale.
Furthermore, Knut has highlighted the issue of teachers who have upgraded their skills through diploma certificates and degrees but have not seen an improvement in their pay. The union’s advocacy aims to address this concern and ensure that teachers’ efforts in enhancing their qualifications are recognized with appropriate promotions.
Whether the TSC will respond to these pleas and take action remains to be seen. The situation raises important questions about career development and recognition of qualifications within the teaching profession in Kenya.
